Day 4 - Results of the Charrette Emmendingen & Next Steps

 

 
1. Emmendingen and its region is very well suitable as a location for the European College of Human Ecology:

° there exist significant possibilities and challenges in the field of environmentalism in the region;

° the study focus could include issues of transport, spatial and city planning and design as well as organic farming and production of organic food;

° significant openness and encouragement has been shown by local and regional businesses, politicians, government authorities, and other organizations.

2. The German Society for Human Ecology and its associated community is able to provide the necessary academic support in the organization and development of the college through:

° a core group of the initiators, supporters and backers which form the starting core of the faculty and staff;

° a commitment to secure the provision of study courses with a total amount of 90 semester periods per week.

3. The intention to choose Emmendingen as location to settle the College has begun to take tangible form:

° there are four suitable sites; two are suited to build a residential city campus and the other two to build a traditional residential campus at the edge or outside of the city;

° a more detailed estimation of the costs has been developed which shows:

° the basic funding needed to construct or convert the buildings andnecessary infrastructure is approximately 15 million Euros and

° the annual operating costs for 100 students is approximately 3 million Euros;

° a network of founders and sponsors of the College in Emmendingen has been formed. This network could be developed further based of the results of the Charrette Emmendingen.
 
     
   
 
1. Round table discussions with interested citizens of Emmendinger will be held at regular intervals.

2. A documentation summarizing the process and the results of the Charrette Emmendingen will be prepared.

3. The results of the Charrette will be presented at the international conference of the Society for Human Ecology in April 2011 in the United States. Meetings are also planned with the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor/ME and Green Mountain College in Poultney/VE concerning future cooperation.
4. The results of the Charrette will be presented at the annual symposium of the German Society for Human Ecology in May 2011 in Sommerhausen / Germany. At the same time, the initiative/study group of the college will meet to coordinate the next steps.

5. The network of supporters in Emmendingen and the region is to be expanded during summer 2011 with the establishing an e-mail listing.

6. Shortly after the meetings in April and May 2011, the securing of financial backing for the College in Emmendingen will commence.
7. A full Charrette is planned in summer 2011 in Emmendingen.
This Charrette will include the financial backers, and will study in detail the analyses concerning the final site selection and to prepare the actual foundation of the college.

8. Around the same time The German Human Ecology Academic Foundation will be established. An office will be opened In Emmendingen in order to coordinate and organize the founding of the college.

9. A summer school in 2012 could be held, and it would serve as a trial-run for the first official academic year. It will also serve as an introductory course for future students.
