Bread & Peace at Climate Change - Design

The Bread & Peace @ Climate Change (B&P@CC) project aims to investigate the impacts of climate change on extensive and/or organic farming and sustainable food production systems and business. The German Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung) supports the German feasibility study to build cooperation and knowledge exchange concepts with partners in Australia.
Our question is: How does climate change (global warming) affect social peace as a consequence of changing food security in our countries? The focus of this project is on how global warming changes ecosystem capacities to produce food in different regions.  We want to learn about the socio-economic effects on both areas, in the regions of production and in those regions where people depend on the products to consume.
The project will look how changes affect nations that are economically developed, but ecologically dependent on landscapes with productive capacity in order to maintain their food security. Germany and the countries of the European Union will serve as one set of comparison countries.
The project will draw on and extend research behind such concepts as “food miles”, “virtual water”, “carbon accounting” and “food sovereignty and food security”, “vulnerability and adaptive capacity”, and contribute to climate impact research activities and issues raised in the IPCC assessments.
We want to follow questions that show the impact to wholesalers and retailers in different countries. What are the effects to the whole food market in the grower regions and the effects to agriculture in Europe? How can we transform these results in a transdisciplinary process including the consumers in the addressed countries? How can the gained information help to shape an environmentally and socially sound development for the future (earth)?
Different case scenarios and their pathways in a short, middle and long term should be used to develop transdisciplinary strategies on regional and local level. Scenarios are supplemented by model experiments, e.g. land use change calculations, changes in yields and resources and commodities flow analyses. Particularly food and daily commodities are in the scope of everyday life. These issues are appropriate to run regional and local comparative studies and organize forums about the future shape of climate change and to encourage concepts and strategies to accommodate in our societies with already existing and forthcoming challenges.
